Relocation Tips

Relocating is a major decision. Especially if children are involved. The items below are listed to assist you in making an informed decision.

Determine a Community…. When determining a community or neighborhood many factors must be taken into consideration.
Is this a clean an safe environment.

  • What types of public services are available such as police, fire department, hospitals and so on.
  • Do homes in the area historically retain their value?
  • Is their continuity in homes in the area or neighborhood. By this I mean are most of the homes a two story or about the same size. The best way to insure a homes resell value is to choose an area with some type of continuity. It is very likely that a 4,000 square foot home will not appreciate very well well if it is surrounded by 1,200 square foot homes.
  • Are their children about the same ages as yours are in the neighborhood?

Check the job market… Are jobs available in your chosen field in the area or community you are working in. While employment may not be a problem in the area you are interested in, is your job available? For example if you are a Radiologist and there is not a hospital near by employment could be a problem.

  • Compare the cost of living to current community… Ok so lets say you have a job lined up, and it pays 10% better than your current job. How does the cost of living compare to your current location. Example, if your new job pays 10% more and the cost of living is 15% higher, you will need to make some lifestyle changes.

Features you need in a home… Separate the needs from the wants. Example; a three car garage would be great and you have always wanted one but a three bedroom home is needed to have enough space for your spouse and 3 children.

Pre-Qualifying with a Mortgage Lender… It is always a good idea to get pre-qualified or pre-approved with a Mortgage Lender. Rates, closing cost and packages very drastically in from different lenders so it is a good idea to shop the Mortgage market.

Schools… What types of schools are available in the area you are looking in?

  • Will they fit your needs. Example; If you children are elementary grade ages, the High School near by real isn’t that much of an immediate asset.
  • If at all possible, take the time to go visit the schools your children may be attending. Meet with the Principle, Guidance Counselor and Coaches.
  • Find out what types of programs are available and how the school stacks up academically.
